Dudley played Mr Golightly

Adeline Genee Theatre, Lingfield Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex

29th October 1973 – 4th November 1973

Adeline Genee Theatre

Built as a dance theatre for Bush Davies School capable of use as a professional theatre. Not one of the great post-war theatres, but well suited to its original purpose and it is a great pity that a building named after such a historically significant dancer should have been lost to the public. The theatre ceased to operate in 1989 when the ballet school closed. Purchased by security firm Sabrewatch.

It had a rectilinear exterior in concrete and brick with a plainly finished auditorium in a single rake with a wide proscenium.

Purchased by Town House Developments by 2009 and demolished in 2011. The site was subsequently acquired by Retirement Villages Ltd for the Charters Village development which retained part of the original school building.

Plot summary

On a foggy night, Michael Starkwedder enters the home of the Warwicks through a window in the study. He finds the dead body of Richard Warwick, and finds Richard’s wife, Laura, holding a gun that supposedly killed him. Michael does not believe she killed him, and she soon tells him she is innocent.

The two decide to place the blame on an enemy from the past, MacGregor, a man whose son was killed when he was run over by Richard’s car while Richard was driving drunk. As the story progresses, it is revealed that Laura was having an affair due to Richard’s cruel nature, and was vouching for the man she was cheating with when she claimed to have killed Richard.

We had one in Southampton in the 1980’s. One of my sisters boyfriends had to go there for shoes (Size 16 feet). They only had 3 styles to choose from, but it was the only place, at the time, he could get footwear.
